Generally, there are a few different names for what you are doing when you add chromatic notes to a melodic line. These terms include upper neighbor, lower neighbor, and appogitura (which I think I misspelled).

I would definitely recommend studying from a theory text book to help improve your guitar skills via your theory knowledge. A good teacher will definitely help (and for theory, it can be a piano teacher, or any other qualified professional)
