ANALYSIS – PLAY BY EAR II
REVISION

The last lesson we covered some basic concepts in how to play a simple tune after listening to it. The key areas covered were:

  • Listen to the tune and determine how many different chords are in the song

  • Determine key signature by first chord (remember this is not always the case!)

  • I – IV – V progression

  • Relative Minor key signatures and relationship with I – IV – V7 progression

  • Same tune, different key, ie: I – IV – V7 chord progression in different key

SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

In this lesson we will expand on our I – IV – V7 progression and have another look at the way songs are put together. We will also construct a simple set of strategies to use in determining how to play a tune by simply listening to it. To finish off, we will introduce key changes and bridges within a song and expand on these in a later lesson.
