Here is a F major scale on the 1st string.

Major scales are made up of a specific pattern of Whole (W)and half (h) steps.

A whole step is two frets, a half step is one fret

Play this exercise, first just to learn the pattern: W-W-h-W-W-W-h

When you have learned the pattern, practice playing the scale while you say each of the notes (say them out loud, for some reason, this greatly aids the learning process)
