In a general way, one can trace the use of chromatic notes in the histories of various music. For example

Bach used few chromatic notes. the notes he used that were not in the key he was currently in were generally chosen to help smooth a modulation. Over the course of musaic history, composers used chromatic notes more often (for example, generally speaking, Mozart used more then Bach, Beethoven more then Mozart, Liszt more then Beethoven, etc)
