So what should you do? How should you practice?


First, thoroughly learn comon voicings. If you can't grab the chords you need (or reasonable alternatives) in a tenth of a second, you need to learn them more completely. transpose each progression, and play them in every key- by ear optimally, or write them out if you need to. Examine alternate voicings for each chord- often times basic substitutions can easily be made.
