The E Phyrgian Scale
The phrygian (Fridge'-gee-en) scale is the third mode of the major scale and is often regarded as being very Spanish-sounding. It's inherently minor in nature. The E phrygian scale comes from the C major scale. So if we take our C major scale but start at the E instead of the C (which is the 3rd note in the C major scale and hence, why it is the third mode), we get:
E · F · G · A · B · C · D
In the example below, we play our E phrygian scale over a repeating E minor 7 chord. Play it slowly until you get
it under your fingers, and then gradually increase the tempo.
