There are three types of minor scales that are normally used in most music;ie Natural, Melodic, and Harmonic.

The natural minor starts on the equivalent of the vi scale degree.

C major scale = C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.

Natural minor starts on A. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A. (A is the 6th degree of the C major scale). This might be thought of as starting 3 letters lower, counting from the letter C. The same result is achieved.

The Melodic minor scale raises the 6th and the 7th degrees of the natural minor scale when ascending, or going up the scale. A, B, C, D, E, F#, G#, A. When descending the melodic minor uses the natural minor sequence. Play the melodic minor going up (ascending)and then play the melodic minor going down (descending). The descending melodic minor has the exact same sound as the natural minor.
