The first function of a dominant chord is that it doesn't resolve to its "I" chord. Take a look at the chord progression example below which is the first four bars of the blues.
As you can see, the first measure(Bb13) goes to measure two (Eb9) which is not a V-I cadence. The Jazz Minor Scale is applied in the following way: To go up a fifth and play the Jazz Minor Scale, so using the example a F Jazz Melodic Minor Scale would fit over the Bb13 nicely. The next measure Eb9 would have a Bb Jazz Melodic Minor Scale played over it. |
