HI ALL and welcome once again!
This lesson will take a look at the MELODIC MINOR scale and how jazzers apply this scale when improvising. Before beginning I must first make the distinction between the Melodic Minor scale and what is today known as the Jazz (Melodic) Minor Scale. The Melodic minor as learned by classical guitarist and notated in Theory/Harmony texts shows the Melodic Minor scale ascending as a natural minor scale with its 6th and 7th degree raised a half step but this scale descends as a Natural Minor Scale. In the jazz world, the melodic minor ascends and descends the same, no changing of notes thus the name Jazz Minor Scale. This scale can also be looked at as a Major Scale with its third degree lowered. This lesson will demonstrate the usage of the Jazz Melodic Minor Scale.
