Is it possible to play melody and the rhythm/bass on the same guitar without fingerpicking? Sure. The call and answer style of the blues makes it easy. I like to think of the "call" as the melody and the "answer" as the basic rhythm. I usually try to keep the answer the same or similar thoughout a song, but it isn't necessary. If it sounds good than don't change it to conform. This sequence goes call-answer-call-answer-call-answer.
