Untill recently, whenever I was going to play a lead over a progression, I allways approached it the same way. Let's say the song was in the key of C major (A minor for us rock guys!). I would go to my favorite pattern (#1) to begin the solo. I could move this pattern up an octave (to the 17th fret) or, if I were daring, I could move into pattern #2. I knew the other patterns for C major, but it seemed I would allways use these two.
