A Little Comment On Modes

Most people are totally confused by modes anyway and I know why. It's because they're badly named.

Now they call a mode by its note-name rather than the scale-name. We all know D Dorian implies the C major scale but if you see Eb Phrygian you have to think which scale Eb is the 3rd note of...

... which is, of course, a trick question because the answer's B major. B major is a sharp scale so it doesn't have an Eb in it, it's a D#. Unless you want to call it Cb major which only odd people do :)

However if we called modes by their scale-name then it's easy. C Dorian is the 2nd note of the C scale - D. Ab Lydian is the 4th note of the Ab scale - Db. Much easier.

But we're stuck with the present system so that's that. Hmmph!
