By learning the five most commonly used chords, you should be able to accompany most songs.

If you could play these five chords in every key, so much the better. You'd be able to vamp to most tunes.

Thousands of songs only have three chords in them, and some only have two. Others have four or five. If you knew all five chords in each key you would be able to play the chords of most popular songs. To play in one key, you'd need to learn 5 chords, but if you wish to be able to play in every key, you'd need to learn 15 chord shapes giving you a total of 36 chords. Alternatively; you could use a capodastra to transpose to an other key.
