One of the most fundamental techniques in heavy rock style is the picking technique. Initially inspired by players outside the genre such as Al Di Meola and Steve Morse, it is widely used to add tension to solos and provide a more aggressive feel. Pushing things further, the integration of fast picking, blues phrasing, and a strong melodic angle towards classical music gave birth to the neo-classical style consolidated by Yngwie Malmsteen. The following exercises will tighted synchronization between hands and serve as examples of linear playing.
