When I play these tunes I like to incorporate lines in them as well. It breaks up the sound and makes for further interest. The secret, of course, is to keep them within the beat and in time.

Being able to put in lines as well as the other picking frees the improviser up considerably. Again, experience is the key to making it sound acceptable.
