just say you have a rythem that contains the notes (G, A, and A#).. Now what scale would fit over that. Example: a (G) harmonic minor would be a good scale to use for that rythem becuase the harmonic minor has the notes (G, A, and A#). Basically what your doing is basing the scale off the cord rythem.
