Standing in the Shadows of Motown

Overall this is a transcription book, but done in the style of an instructional book, teaching you the techniques and style of James Jamerson. Comes with 2 cd's of recording to play along with! A great buy, more than worth it.

Great book

This book is an excellent biography of the late and great bass player James Jamerson.

It includes sheet music for his most famous bass riffs which most of you will recognize. (ie. What's Going On, My Guy, Ain't Too Proud To Beg, Heard It Through The Grapevine - just to name a few!) My personal beef with the book is that it has no tab (but it did help me to get off my lazy butt and try to learn how to read the sheet music.)

The best part is that the book includes two CD's with all star bass player interpretations of his bass lines and a short tribute by each person saying how Jamerson inspired them. (John Entwistle, Marcus Miller, Paul McCartney, Marcus Miller, Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, Francis Rocco Prestia - just to name a few!) This is an excellent book. Buy it. And if you haven't seen the movie with the same title, I suggest you do so.

Amazing job done by Dr. Licks on this book. It's a great ovation done to James Jamerson. It is a complete musicography and a more-than-well-done biography. With talks and opinions from many great bassists, it really shows how far goes the influence of Jamerson. The chosed songs are excellent and very fun to play with very accurate transcriptions and great playing. It helps players to develop their skills of rhythm and of feeling of a bass line. It really gets you through the motown era, bringing memories and emotions.

This book is one of the greatest books that I've ever read about music. It tells you about life of legendary bassist James Jamerson and it also contains a lot of transcriptions of his incredible basslines! I really recommend you to buy this book

A treasure. Makes you want to get that old 60's albums. I am glad, they did not include tabs, which would be a waste of paper. You people should learn to read and this is a great exercise for that.

This is a transcription book. I am using it build my technique as a player. I start with the easier lines, and work through the book. The lines aren't in order from easier to harder or anything though, so I rely on my teacher (who also has the book) to help me choose what to tackle next. Working through the book is building my rhythm and timing and left and right hand coordination. It is also building my reading skills. The CDs that come with the book are very helpful. I play along with them to help me master the timing of the grooves. The bonus is the book and CDs also give you information about James Jamerson, who was one of the greatest bass players who ever lived. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to build a solid sense of rhythm at any level.

This is a great way to gain insight into the pionering style of James Jamerson. His influence has been wide spread and is evident from the wide varity of contibutors to the book. Some of the examples are easy and some are very advanced. I use this book with my students and have had good response from my students of all backgrounds. I have the tape version which is the only draw back. The CD version would be much better.

This is a biographic, transcription book. Irefer back to this book quite often and It has had a tremendous effect on my playing. I feel it is well suited for all levels and styles of playing. Included are two tapes, on which several bassist give their stories on how Jamerson influenced their playing, and also play some of their favorite Motown tracks. In the book are transciptions of the tracks being played as well as a short bio on the respective players. The music is all trascription, no tabs which would be helpful. This is an excellent book. Every bassist should have a copy of it as required reading.
