Here is another approach (departure point) for improvising. Consider it food for thought, take it with a grain of salt, don't take any wooden nickles, and always keep a stiff upper lip.
The key to playing jazz convincingly is to play the thirds and sevenths...in as much as there is a magic note the third and seventh are them.
With a little practice, you can begin to link up thirds and sevenths from chord to chord. The trick is to know your chord. (but that's another lesson.)
