One of the first chords that's taught in a lot of beginner guitar books is the G7. As far as I can tell, there's two reasons for this:
  1. It's one of the few 7th chords that uses open strings
  2. G7 belongs to the key of C, which is often the first key signature that is taught (since it has no sharps and flats)
Look at the example below. Wrap your fingers around it and play it. Strum along with the example till it feels good, then go on to the next page, where we'll learn some common uses for it.
