So you really want to learn your major scale? Well, let's take a look at a simple exercise you can use to help you shed any scale. This exercise will also help you become familiar with the intervals that exist between any two notes in the major scale.

Let's look at the C major scale: C · D · E · F · G · A · B

In our exercise, we'll play the C major scale in ascending and descending fashion. However, each time we play it, we'll insert another note from the scale that's a set interval above the one we just played. In the example below, we'll insert the note that is a second above the one we just played. We'll use this technique when we ascend, and we'll just play it in reverse to descend. The progression is as follows:

  1. Play a C
  2. Insert a D after the C (a 2nd or 1 scale tone above)
  3. Play a D
  4. Insert an E after the D
  5. Repeat all the way up the scale
  6. Play it in reverse
