Hopefully, you should already be familiar with the strong and sturdy E major chord.
E major

 

 


It's the foundation of a lot of guitar-based music since your open 6th string is an E, and thus, the E major chord is the lowest and boomiest sounding of our open string major chords (C, A, G, E, and D).

There are too many ways in which the E chord is used, but here's a couple. Rock tunes are often in the key of E major, and the open string E major chord often anchors these tunes. Here's an example of this type of progression, which reminds of a tune by Live:
