Lessons: Lesson #300: Chord Scales |
|
Many jazz guitarists have used block chord soloing to help fill out their sound in a solo or small combo gig, create intensity within a solo, or as a basis for playing chord melody style guitar. This lesson will provide you with the basic tools (chord shapes) you will need.
Although he is known for his octave playing, Wes Montogomery was a master of this type of playing, as was Joe Pass. Johnny Smith, Howard Van Eps, Charlie Hunter and Jimmy Bruno, and many others have also demonstrated remarkable facility with this technique.
Keep in mind that there are at least 2 different concepts of what chord scales are. The first ones I will deal with pertain to keeping a same (or similiar) chord type and using that to harmonize different notes of the scale. At the end of the lesson, I will also diagram chord voicings useful for harmonizing each scale tome as if it were the root of the chord. |
