Hiatt began his musical career as a Nashville songwriter, moving to the country music capitol after performing in a succession of bands during high school. While he performed a bit on the side, in the early '70s Hiatt was mostly a songwriter, penning hits for Three Dog Night, Conway Twitty and others. During the early '90s Hiatt was finally recognized as one of the key singer-songwriters of the past 20 years, covered by talents ranging from Bob Dylan to Bonnie Raitt to Iggy Pop.
